I selected the highest-quality paper option KDP offers for this format: Premium white 60 lb (90 gsm). Even so, the pages have some show-through. I recommend using crayons or colored pencils, since markers may bleed through and affect the artwork on the reverse side.

The free printable page: snow-capped mountains behind a row of small houses, framed by two palm trees, in plain black outline.

Background, motivation, and process

I've always wanted to publish a book and now I can say that I have. I moved to Irvine for work back in 2016, yet even after almost a decade, I still felt like a visitor because I don't go out much. But after having my daughter a couple years ago, I've ventured out more, wanting to find toddler-friendly activities to do. Now in 2026, we're at a point where she recognizes things like "balloon" (from Great Park), "lizard", "excavator", and "the beach" and I thought it would be fun to give her a SoCal coloring book but I couldn't find any so I decided to make one.

It's unfortunate that there are so many AI slop coloring books for kids and I didn't want mine to be like one of them. So I taught myself how to use the pen tool in Inkscape to figure out how to draw SVGs and pored over every page of this book, fixing, fiddling, finagling → watch the video below to see that process. I also spent time arranging the order of the pages like the way I used to arrange songs in a mix CD.

Now it's finally ready: a coloring book for kids featuring the familiar sights of Orange County. I might do another one in the future, after I explore the area more with my baby girl but for now, this is what I have. If you or someone you know enjoys SoCal, my Little Kids Coloring Book would make a great gift.
